Recreation and Parks

The Douglasville Parks & Recreation Department maintains 7 parks containing more than 300 acres of land for public enjoyment. Sports programs offered by the Parks & Recreation Department’s Leagues include adult softball, youth baseball, soccer and tennis. One of the most popular spots for recreational fun in Douglasville is the 500 acre Boundary Waters Aquatic Center. Featuring an 8 lane, 25 yard long heated competition pool and a 4 lane, heated therapeutic teaching pool, it is also operated and managed by the Parks & Recreation Department. Development plans for the center include multi-use equestrian trails, hiking trails, picnic and playground areas, a softball/baseball complex, a tennis complex with 12 courts and a clubhouse, and football/soccer stadium with a running track. The Boundary Waters Aquatic Center is located at 5000 Georgia Highway near the intersection of Routes 92 North and 166 East in Douglasville, (770) 489-2175.

Robert G. Hunter Memorial Park is Douglasville's largest park

Named after Douglas County’s first military casualty in the Vietnam War, U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant Robert G. "Jerry" Hunter, the Robert G. Hunter Memorial Park is home to the Douglas County Boys & Girls Club. The park contains a swimming pool, a wildlife pond with walking trails, and a children’s playground with a small train that operates during the summer. The six other public parks located in Douglasville are Jesse Davis Memorial Park, Keith Park, Mill Village Park, Worthan Park, West Pines Golf Club and the Fowler Field Soccer Complex. Many community events are held in the parks and in O’Neal Plaza, especially around major holidays. Some examples are the Fourth of July Parade, the Halloween Moonlight Run & Chili Cook-Off, and the Holiday Tour of Homes.

The Clinton Nature Preserve is only a few miles from Douglasville

Located off Ephesus Church Road about one mile west of Post Road, the Clinton Nature Preserve contains 200 acres of nature trails, a walking track, picnic areas, a 100% disabled-accessible children's play garden, and an amphitheater for shows. People who hike 1 mile into the woods can also find the Carnes Cabin, a pre-Civil War log cabin that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

And then there is Six Flags Over Georgia Theme Park

About 5 miles from Douglasville in Austell is the 230 acre Six Flags Over Georgia Theme Park. Opened in 1967, the park features some of the most fearsome roller coaster rides in America including the Goliath hypercoaster, the flying coaster Superman known as Ultimate Flight, and The Georgia Scorcher, which is one of the tallest and fastest stand-up roller coasters in the world. Skull Island is the place to be during hot summer days. Fun for the whole family at Skull Island includes an interactive water play attraction with water slides; Acrophobia, which is advertised as the world's first floorless freefall tower ride; and the Riverview Carousel, one of only three remaining five-abreast carousels that are known to still exist. The carousel itself is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. For information about park hours and admission prices, call (770) 739-3400.
